U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez has introduced legislation aimed at permanently protecting the name Boca Chica Beach while increasing transparency in the federal geographic naming process.
The Hands Off Our Boca Chica Beach Act, introduced July 20, would officially codify the historic name “Boca Chica Beach” in federal law and require the U.S. Board on Geographic Names’ Domestic Names Committee to notify the area’s congressional representative before considering any future name change proposals affecting their district.
According to Gonzalez, the legislation was prompted by a recent proposal to rename Boca Chica Beach “Cyber Beach,” a move that generated widespread opposition throughout Cameron County.
“It is absurd that a name proposal from outside our state was able to threaten the very essence of a cultural and historic landmark in South Texas,” Gonzalez said in a statement. “While our community was able to quickly band together to stop this initial proposal from being adopted, my bill would ensure that Boca Chica Beach always remains the People’s Beach.”
Under the proposed legislation, the beach’s name would be protected by federal law, preventing future renaming proposals from moving forward during the current session of Congress.
The bill also seeks to improve transparency by requiring advance notification to members of Congress whenever a federal geographic name change is proposed within their districts.
The legislation follows a July 9 meeting of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names’ Domestic Names Committee, which unanimously rejected a proposal to rename Boca Chica Beach. The proposal, submitted by a Mississippi resident, faced strong opposition from local residents, elected officials and SpaceX.
Gonzalez said Cameron County residents received less than 24 hours’ notice before the committee was scheduled to vote on the proposal, limiting public awareness and participation in the process.
He also noted that changing the beach’s name could have created additional costs for local governments responsible for updating road signs and other public identifiers.
If approved by Congress, the Hands Off Our Boca Chica Beach Act would permanently preserve the historic Boca Chica Beach name while establishing new notification requirements for future federal geographic name change proposals.
