SpaceX recently issued its Starbase impact report for the second quarter of 2026, meant to highlight the ways the company is “driving growth in the Rio Grande Valley.”
The report leads with scholarships the company has funded, intended to “spark curiosity in science, technology and space exploration while helping talented students from the Rio Grande Valley pursue their dreams and contribute to making life multi-planetary.”
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s oft-stated goal is to establish a permanent human colony on Mars using the Starship technology the company is developing at Boca Chica/Starbase.
In June, the company awarded scholarships of $10,000 each to 11 students from the Brownsville and Point Isabel independent school districts to help those students cover college expenses.
The report next highlights SpaceX’s support of Cameron County park improvements. The county on June 26 held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Andy Bowie Park Improvements Project, which included construction of new elevated pavilions and picnic areas, refurbished restroom/bathhouse, concession building and ranger station, and improved beach access and walkways.
SpaceX contributed $2 million to the nearly $7 million project. In addition, $4.2 million came from the Biden administration’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), plus another $662,000 from certificates of obligation issued by the county.
Project upgrades also included installing parking lot overlay designed to withstand the coastal environment, picnic tables, and rinse stations on the park’s south end.
Andy Bowie Park was named for a county commission who served in the 1950s. It was the second coastal park in the county’s parks system, established after Isla Blanca Park, according to the U.S. Senate Congressional Record of Nov. 5, 1963.
SpaceX said its contribution toward the Andy Bowie Park project is part of a $15 million overall investment in improving county park amenities and recreational and educational opportunities.
“As part of the Rio Grande Valley, SpaceX invests in the places we live, work and play, strengthening shared community spaces that showcase the Valley’s natural beauty,” the company said. “The renovated Andy Bowie Park gives families across the region a place to picnic, enjoy the beach and make lasting memories.”
The second quarter impact report also touted SpaceX volunteers’ major beach clean-up efforts as well as their role in helping save a “266-pound sea turtle.”
