BROWNSVILLE, TX—A Los Fresnos man was sentenced to 35 years in state prison after being convicted of murder in a Cameron County courtroom last week. The conviction stemmed from a deadly 2025 shooting in San Benito.
The October 3, 2025 weekend shooting left one person dead and a female critically injured, according to the San Benito Police Department (SBPD). The victim was later identified as Clemente Medina.
Miguel Monrreal (24) was apprehended a day after the shooting, which took place on East Stenger St. in San Benito.
“The City of San Benito thanks its officers and partnering law enforcement agencies for their swift action and commitment to keeping the community safe,” read a statement from the City shortly after the incident.
Around 10:34 p.m. on October 3, officers responded to a 911 call relating to possible gunfire. When they arrived, they found a man and a woman, both in their 20s, with gunshot injuries, according to a SBPD report.
San Benito police searched for the armed suspect following the fatal shooting, which took place late Friday night on October 3 in the 900 block of East Stenger Street. Medina died during the altercation, and a female victim was listed in critical condition at the time.
The suspect was identified as Miguel Monrreal, then age 23, of Los Fresnos.
Monrreal was described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5’9” tall and 180 pounds, with tattoos on his arms, ankles, and neck. He fled the scene on foot and was considered armed and dangerous.
The victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where Medina was later declared dead.
Investigators believe the shooting occurred after a group of individuals who were spending time together got into a verbal and physical altercation.
“This was a tragic and senseless act of violence,” said SBPD Police Chief Mario Perea shortly after the incident.
