Ayy Miguel brings flavor, variety, welcoming new spot to SPI – Port Isabel-South Padre Press

By Laurie Coker

South Padre Island has a new restaurant worth checking out. Ayy Miguel, conveniently located at 2213 Padre Blvd., comes from the same owners behind White Sands and White Sands Bakery, and after two visits, I can say the food has been consistently delicious, served hot, and packed with flavor.

On my first visit, I ordered the fried fish tacos while my guest chose the sizzling fajitas. The tacos were flavorful and well prepared, but the fajitas really stood out. Too often, fajitas around here are simply plated rather than served the way they should be—on a steaming skillet. Ayy Miguel gets that right. The fajitas, served with beans and a choice of tortillas, arrived sizzling hot, tender, savory, and full of flavor.

On my second visit, I tried the tacos pastor, which were equally satisfying. The Mexican dishes, in particular, are rich, authentic, and well-seasoned without being overdone. The fish, perfectly battered, was cooked to perfection, and the rice and beans tasted like the food I grew up eating.

The impressively wide and varied menu offers everything from tacos, enchiladas, and other Mexican plates to seafood, burgers, sandwiches, pasta, steaks, and more. In fact, we tried a cup of the clam chowder, and I am certain I will be back for a bowl soon. Perfect flavor and texture! Portions are plentiful, too, so diners certainly won’t leave hungry. They also offer desserts, a nice variety of appetizers and soups, salads, and kid-friendly menu options.

Service was another plus. During both visits, the staff was attentive without hovering, and the food arrived quickly and piping hot. That may seem like a small thing, but it makes a difference. The prices are on par with other local eateries, offering both affordable options and higher-end items.

The restaurant itself is spacious, with warm, welcoming colors and plenty of room for larger groups. A bar runs nearly half the length of the restaurant, and there are gaming machines and enough open space to accommodate a band or live music. Parking is also decent, with plenty of spaces in front and additional parking in the rear.

Ayy Miguel is a welcome  addition  to  South Padre Island’s dining scene. It quickly became a new favorite of mine, one I expect to recommend often. With generous portions, authentic Mexican dishes, attentive service, and excellent food on both of my visits, I am already looking forward to going back.
