South Padre Island City Council members addressed the proposed tax rate, employee compensation, Island Gateway improvements and ecotourism initiatives during their Aug. 5 regular meeting.

Council members approved Resolution No. 2026-16, setting the proposed tax rate for purposes of publishing notice of the upcoming meeting to vote on the 2026 tax rate. According to the city, the proposed rate remains the same as last year’s.

The council also received a presentation on findings and recommendations from a comprehensive market salary survey conducted by Salary.com’s Compensation Consulting Practice. The survey examined city employee compensation as part of the city’s review of salaries and market competitiveness.

Another  major  discussion  centered  on  the Island  Gateway  Median Project, with council members reviewing final construction plans and  details  of  the  project’s bid documents. The project is intended to improve the appearance of the Island’s entrance and Padre Boulevard corridor.

Council members also approved a $50,000 ecotourism sponsorship for RGV Reef.

In a related action, the council approved placement of an educational display by Friends of RGV Reef at the recently opened Marisol Laguna Madre Boat Ramp. The display will feature an artificial reef pyramid and provide visitors with information related to the organization’s reef efforts.

The Marisol facility recently became the Island’s first new public bayside boat ramp in more than 30 years and includes truck and trailer parking, a fish cleaning station and an ADA-accessible loading and attendant dock.

Council members also approved a scheduling change for September. The regular City Council meeting originally scheduled for Sept. 16 will instead be held as a special meeting Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 5:30 p.m.
