One of Padre Boulevard’s most recognizable sights has come down after the massive shark entrance at Jaws Beachworld collapsed over the weekend.
The shark structure at Jaws Beachworld, 815 Padre Blvd., collapsed Sunday, Aug. 23. No injuries were reported, and the business remained open as crews worked to remove the damaged structure.
The oversized shark, with its open mouth surrounding the store entrance, had been part of the South Padre Island landscape since Jaws Beachworld opened in 2001. Over the years, it became a familiar photo stop for tourists and families traveling along Padre Boulevard.
News of the collapse quickly circulated on social media, where the reaction ranged from disappointment and nostalgia to humor. Some commenters recalled taking photos beneath the shark during family vacations, while others joked that they would not miss the intimidating entrance. One sentiment, however, was widely shared: relief that no one was injured when the structure came down.
For longtime Island visitors, the shark was more than simply the entrance to a beachwear store. Its unusual design made it an easily recognizable roadside attraction and part of the visual landscape visitors encountered while vacationing on South Padre Island.
The cause of the collapse has not been determined. As of this week, it was also unclear whether the shark will be rebuilt or replaced.
Jaws Beachworld remains open while removal of the damaged structure continues.
