DHR Health’s 20th annual Fishing for Hope Tournament reeled in more than half a million dollars for healthcare services benefiting uninsured and underserved families across the Rio Grande Valley.

The Aug. 22 tournament, held at Jim’s Pier on South Padre Island, raised $524,130 for the Hope Family Health Center in McAllen. The nonprofit provides healthcare services to economically disadvantaged, medically uninsured and underserved children and adults throughout the region.

DHR Health employees alone raised more than $160,000, with Radiology, Lab and the Business Office earning top departmental fundraising honors.

“For 20 years, the Fishing for Hope tournament has brought together our employees, sponsors, and community partners to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most,” DHR Health Senior Executive Vice President Marissa Castaneda said. “Every dollar raised will help the Hope Family Health Center continue providing essential medical services to uninsured families.”

Fishing for Hope has served as DHR Health’s signature fundraising event for two decades and has grown into one of the largest fishing tournaments benefiting a nonprofit organization on the Texas coast.

Following the competition, participants gathered at the South Padre Island Convention Center, where tournament winners were recognized and an auction was held.

In the physician division, Dr. Fuad Zayed took first place, followed by Dr. Delisa Guadarrama in second, Dr. Gaudencio Olgin in third, Dr. Jose Andres Gonzalez in fourth and Dr. Juan Bernini in fifth.

The Ron Hoover Team claimed first place in the guest division. 7 Day Addiction finished second, followed by Boey Legends, Captains Cove and Reel Diagnostic with X-Ray on Demand.

With the milestone 20th tournament complete, DHR Health is already seeking sponsors for next year’s 21st annual Fishing for Hope event. Those interested in sponsorship opportunities can contact the DHR Health Events Department at (956) 362-3140.
