Visitors looking for something beyond the beach during Labor Day weekend can explore another side of South Padre Island when the First Friday Art Walk returns Sept. 4.
Scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m., the free monthly event gives residents and visitors an opportunity to move between participating galleries and creative spaces while meeting artists and viewing their work.
Malia Quinn of Quinn Gallery said the evening is designed to be approachable for everyone, whether they regularly visit galleries or are experiencing the Island’s art community for the first time.
“The First Friday Art Walk has a relaxed, come-as-you-are energy,” Quinn said. “Visitors can stroll between galleries, meet artists in person, and experience a mix of styles — from coastal-inspired paintings to contemporary work.”
Quinn said one of the strengths of the Art Walk is that visitors have an opportunity to see the work of local artists inside the spaces where creativity takes place.
The event has also helped connect the Island’s artists with both residents and tourists.
“It’s the one time each month when the galleries are all open in the evening at the same time,” Quinn said. “There are currently seven stops on the Island, and each gallery provides a guide so visitors know where to go.”
Quinn said the Art Walk offers a meaningful cultural experience for visitors. People often discover an artist whose work resonates with them, opening the door to future commissions, new collectors, and ongoing support of the Island’s art scene so it can continue to flourish.
The Island itself provides plenty of inspiration for artists, she said.
Quinn pointed to the constantly changing light, water, sky and wildlife as influences, along with the slower coastal pace that gives artists time to observe their surroundings and create. She said many Island galleries also offer workshops or customized lessons that allow travelers to explore their own creativity while visiting.
At Quinn Gallery, Art Walk visitors can expect original oil paintings, including coastal and figurative works, along with pieces from guest artists. The gallery also offers live charcoal sketch portraits, allowing visitors to sit for a quick, one-of-a-kind piece.
Quinn said refreshments are offered during the Art Walk, with the gallery maintaining a welcoming, social setting where people can spend time viewing the artwork up close.
For those who have never participated, Quinn said the evening offers a chance to discover a part of South Padre Island they may not have experienced before.
“It’s a chance to experience a different side of the Island,” Quinn said. “Beyond the beach, there’s a creative community here that’s worth seeing.”
For Labor Day weekend visitors, the Sept. 4 Art Walk provides an opportunity to meet local artists, explore Island galleries and perhaps leave South Padre with an original reminder of their time along the coast.
