The City of South Padre Island has completed Phase III improvements at its Southern Pickleball Courts, although a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 6, was canceled due to weather.

The ceremony was originally planned at the facility at 610 Padre Blvd. to celebrate the latest additions to the recreational complex.

Phase III includes an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant restroom, hydration station, shade structure and new perimeter fencing around the courts.

According to the city, the improvements are intended to increase accessibility, provide additional amenities for players and improve safety at the facility.

The project is part of a multi-year effort to expand and improve recreational opportunities on South Padre Island.

City capital improvement documents show the project dates to 2022, when City Council approved funding for Phase I, which included two pickleball courts, an ADA ramp and sidewalk. In 2023, the council approved a design concept and a $150,000 budget amendment for Phase II.

The city’s capital improvement plan listed $88,900 in General Fund funding for Phase III, with completion anticipated in 2026. The amount reflects planned funding rather than a confirmed final project cost.

City officials said the Oct. 6 ribbon-cutting ceremony was canceled because of weather conditions. A new date has not yet been announced.
