BROWNSVILLE—Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector Edelmira “Eddie” Garcia recently mailed about 224,963 tax statements for the 2026 tax year to personal property and real estate owners countywide.

These tax statements include Cameron County and all other taxing jurisdictions within the county due to 100% consolidation, Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector press release.

This mail-out includes 209,223 real property accounts and 15,740 personal property accounts. The total 2026 levy for all taxing jurisdictions is $646,709,716.94.

If taxpayers have not received a tax bill, they can still pay their taxes online at cameroncountytx.gov/tac or at any of the Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector’s 11 countywide branch offices.

Under Sec. 31.01(g) of the Texas Property Tax Code, taxpayers are responsible for paying property taxes regardless of whether they receive a tax statement.

According to the press release, taxpayers can view their property tax balance on the Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector’s website at cameroncountytx.gov/tac.

Property tax statements are mailed early to help taxpayers take advantage of tax discounts offered by certain districts. Payments made in October receive a 3% discount, a 2% discount in November, and a 1% discount in December, but only in districts that offer these discounts.

There are no discounts for taxes paid in January 2027. According to the statement, 2026 taxes are due on January 31, 2027, and become delinquent on February 1, 2027.

Property owners who cannot pay their taxes in full can take advantage of various payment plans or make partial payments at any of the 11 Tax Office Branch locations.

Garcia urges taxpayers to make arrangements as soon as possible to ensure taxes are paid in full or that a substantial amount is paid by January 2027 to avoid additional penalties and interest.

Internet payments allow taxpayers to pay their taxes by electronic check from the convenience of home or the office, 24/7, at cameroncountytx.gov/tac.

Fees are reduced when taxes are paid online with an electronic check (bank account and routing numbers are required). A $1 fee applies to electronic check payments of $5,000 or less, and $3 applies to electronic check payments over $5,000.

According to Garcia, this allows taxpayers to skip tax office lines and avoid postage or credit card fees.

The taxpayer is responsible for ensuring that all accounts are included and that banking information is correct to avoid additional fees. A 3% fee still applies to online credit or debit card payments.

Partial payments allow taxpayers to pay their taxes in several installments at the office.

Quarterly payments allow taxpayers who are over 65 years of age or disabled to pay their taxes in quarterly installments without penalty and without accruing interest, in accordance with Texas Property Tax Code Sec. 31.031.

A tax payment agreement allows taxpayers to visit the tax office and sign an agreement to pay their taxes under Texas Property Tax Code Sec. 33.02.

Mail-in payments let taxpayers send property tax payments by check, money order, or cashier’s check.

Over-the-counter payments allow taxpayers to pay taxes in person with a check, cash, or a credit card (VISA, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express) at any Tax Office location and/or at any Lone Star National Bank in Cameron County. A 3% fee applies to all credit cards.

Night drop boxes are located at each tax office drive-thru lane.

Payment methods include drop-off boxes. Checks or money orders can be dropped off at the following locations: Brownsville Drive-Thru, East 8 and Levee St., Brownsville, TX: (956) 589-7088; Harlingen Branch Office, 3302 Wilson Rd., Harlingen, TX: (956) 427-8013; Harlingen Drive-Thru, 300 E.
