The Laguna Madre Sports Park concluded its second softball season with a tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Cantu’s, the champions of the inaugural season, returned stronger than ever, finishing the regular season undefeated and earning the tournament’s top seed.

As the opening round of tournament play concluded, the winning teams advanced to the championship bracket, while the losing teams moved to the consolation bracket.

Cantu’s continued its dominant run following an opening-round victory, steamrolling the competition on its way to the championship game. The defending champions capped off their impressive performance by defeating Hopper Haus, 26-3, to claim their second consecutive Laguna Madre Sports Park softball title.

Meanwhile, in the consolation bracket, Brew Crew prepared to take on the Swingers in their second game after dropping their opening round game against the Ballahollics, 8-5.

True to their name, the Swingers came out swinging, loading the bases early in the top of the first inning Peter Garcia delivered a double that brought home two runs, and a series of solid hits helped the Swingers jump out to a 4-0 lead.

Brew Crew, which had improved tremendously throughout the season, managed to string together some hits of its own but still trailed 4-3 after one inning of play.

The Swingers continued to apply pressure in the second inning, stringing together more hits, including a double by Jose “Hazel” Martinez Jr., to extend their lead to 6-3.

The Swingers added another run in the top of the third to make it a 7-3 game. However, Justin Segars sparked a Brew Crew rally with an inside-the-park homerun. Showing patience at the plate, Brew Crew drew several walks that eventually translated into runs, cutting the Swingers’ lead to just one at 7-6.

Meanwhile, a glance at the Cantu’s versus Ballaholics matchup showed a commanding 12-1 lead for Cantu’s in the fourth inning.

Back to the consolation game, Garcia’s delivered his second double of the game in the top of the fourth inning, increasing Swingers lead to 8-6.

However, Brew Crew answered with a rally of its own in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead, 9-8.

The Brew Crew defense shut down the Swingers in the fifth and sixth innings, preserving the lead and securing their first win of the night.

The consolation championship game featured Brew Crew taking on the Bandidos in a matchup that saw both teams put together strong offensive performances. At one point, Brew Crew appeared poised to pull off an upset, building a commanding 10-3 lead in the fourth inning. However, the Bandidos impressive comeback to rally for a 13-10 win and claim the consolation championship.

Port Isabel Mayor Martin Cantu Jr went on social media and expressed his enjoyment of his team’s accomplishment and the leagues as well.

“Two seasons back-to-back undefeated champions!! The old guys can still get it done! I enjoy seeing our park finally completed and watching all the teams and kids enjoy our new facility. It’s been great to see the tournaments being brought to Port Isabel, and I’m confident that we will continue to attract teams and visitors from all over to experience our sports park. This facility is a great asset to our community and will continue to bring people to the City of Port Isabel for years to come.”
