The San Benito Lady Greyhound Varsity Volleyball Team finished third in District 32-6A, giving the team a second straight year of postseason play, with the Weslaco Lady Panthers back as their bi-district opponent.
The Lady ‘Hounds finished the district with a 4-4 record and were 19-17 overall.
One of the SB losses occurred in Weslaco in September. It resulted in a 3-0 sweep.
The bi-district playoff game was played Thursday at Weslaco (22-13 record). Last year, Weslaco swept San Benito in three sets.
For San Benito to advance to the postseason, second-half losses to the Harlingen Lady Cardinals, Los Fresnos Lady Falcons, and Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers didn’t affect playoff seeding because they were offset by sweeps over the PSJA North Lady Raiders and the PSJA Lady Bears.
San Benito also defeated Harlingen.
All of this put the Lady ‘Hounds within a couple of games of matching their 21-win season from three years ago, when they won district.
CROSS COUNTRY
For the first time in her long cross-country career at SBHS, senior Alexia Delgado competed in the UIL 6A Region IV Cross Country Championships earlier this week.
She finished in 21:33.27, a full three seconds ahead of the nearest runner. As the 5000-meter run ended, she kept pace with six runners who finished just two seconds ahead.
Delgado finished 133rd and was San Benito’s only competitor. The event, held at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, drew 185 runners.
Rio Hondo’s Emily Castaneda competed in the Class 3A Region IV Championships at the same venue. She finished 128th in the 3200-meter race with a time of 17:42.70. Castaneda competed in an event with 169 runners.

San Benito High School golfers competed in the Brownsville Invitational at Riverbend Golf Course on October 23-24.
