The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority (CCRMA) are offering in-person and online options to encourage public feedback on a proposed widening of FM 1846, which includes Oscar Williams Road in San Benito.
The proposed widening affects the area between Business 77 and San Jose Ranch Road.
The online public meeting is being held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, on the TxDOT.gov website. Participants are asked to enter the keyword “FM 1846 (Oscar Williams Rd.).”
The session begins at 5 p.m.
The in-person forum is scheduled for Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Academy Cafeteria, 2115 N. Oscar Williams Road, San Benito.
The virtual meeting consists of a pre-recorded video presentation and includes both audio and visual components, according to a CCRMA statement.
The presentation will be posted online by Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 5 p.m. and will remain available for at least 15 days.
Individuals without internet access may call (956) 621-5573 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to ask questions and access project materials during the project development process.
The in-person option is being held in an open-house format.
In-person attendees may view the same presentation delivered during the online public meeting, which is being displayed on a screen, review hard copies of project materials, ask questions of TxDOT staff and consultants, and leave written comments.
The scope of the proposed project includes widening 1.62 miles of the existing two-lane rural roadway to four lanes within a proposed 140-foot-wide right-of-way (ROW).
The proposed 82-foot-wide roadway consists of four 12-foot-wide travel lanes, a 14-foot-wide continuous left-turn lane, two 10-foot-wide shoulders, and a 10-foot-wide shared-use path on one side of the roadway.
Drainage is managed by roadside ditches. An asphalt overlay is included as part of the proposed project. Approximately 0.1 miles of incidental construction would occur north of San Jose Ranch Rd. to ensure proper roadway transition.
The proposed project is anticipated to require 6.95 acres of new ROW.
The proposed project also includes an action within a floodplain. No wetlands or Section 4(f) properties are expected in the project area.
Although additional right-of-way is required, no residential or non-residential structures are expected to be displaced at this time.
Information on services and benefits available to affected property owners, as well as the tentative schedule for right-of-way acquisition and construction, may be obtained from the CCRMA office by calling (956) 621-5573.
Environmental documentation and studies, maps and drawings showing the project location and design, tentative construction schedules, and other information regarding the proposed project are on file and available for inspection Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the CCRMA office at 3461 Carmen Ave., Rancho Viejo.

The virtual public meeting and the in-person option are being conducted in English.
For individuals who require an interpreter or a document translator because English is not a primary language or because an individual has difficulty communicating effectively in English, one will be provided.

The public is asked to be aware that advance notice is required because some services and accommodations may require time for the CCRMA to arrange them.
